Tsunami,
Wow! The kids came in with so many questions, we just sat down and watched the news for about half an hour. We then watched a video on Learn 360 about what a tsunami is and how they work. How does this relate to what we do? Good question everyone! Well, we are going to write about it. Teachable moments happen all the time, and when ya get one one that they all "buy into" run with it! Today we are taking our Ancient China test, and handing in our 20th DOL packet. Who knew the kids would be so excited about grammar and punctuation, similes and metaphors, and let's not forget the ever popular syllable! We are going to start on Ancient India next, and we will also begin talking about our end of the year research paper. Have a great weekend from all of us here at...Walsh's World!!!

March 10, 2011

Hiya Folks,
Welcome once again to Walsh's World! We had a great day today! We took a writing test, and I believe that overall we are in really good shape. Our DOL has made such a huge difference for our kids. Kids, who were afraid to stand in front of the class before, are raising their hands and coming to the board to show what they know...I am so very proud of them. tomorrow is the big China test! I hope the kids study hard. They know the materail, so it's time to get after it and pass the test! I am sure they will do fine! DOL is due, and, as always, they need to read 20 pages tonight. Next week, on Friday, a Realistic Fiction 5 paragraph essay is due! Got to head to track practice... have a great night!

March 8, 2011

Hey folks,
Okay, we came up with a plan for our Reading genre and our book reports. We are going to read a Realistic Fiction novel, and we are going to write a five paragragh essay for our book report. The kids in one group didn't get to go to the library because we had an issue, so they need to take care of their own business. We will test on China on Friday of this week and finish up our DOL. Talk to you later!!!

March 7, 2011

Hey Folks,
Here is what we have going on in room 20: our weekly DOL (Daily Oral Language), Chapter 5: China (we're finishing it up), and we will begin a new genre in Reading. The kids decided on autobiography, so that is what we're going to do. I told the kids today that we are going to keep doing our daily writing prompts, but we are also going to extend them and start writing papers as a regular thing. I know they don't like it, but it is a talent each of them must possess to be successful in their future education. We read 20 pages a night, every night, so that is not something I should ever have to remind them of. We haven't decided on what we are doing for our book report project yet, but I think it is going to have something to do with Author's Purpose. Our next move in geography will be into the world of Ancient India. remember, school will be out before we know it so keep working hard.

Mr. Walsh

February 24, 2011

Welcome to Thursday,
Tonight's homework is as usual...read 20 pages from what should be an AR Horror book. Horror is the genre we are working on with an emphasis on Theme. The kids will have a book report due next Friday March 4, 2011. the book report will be in the form of a tombstone!!! How cool is that?
Tomorrow we will also focus on our last portion of our weekly DOL; we will read the letter the friend we sit next to wrote to us, and write a return letter; we will go over our map of China; and finally we should have time to start into the chapter dealing with China!  It's going to be busy, but we are up to the task!  if anyone has a suggestion as to what our next genre should be...we are all ears!!!

Mr. Walsh

February 22:

Hey,
Welcome to Tuesday.  Here's what we have going on today: The kids were given their weekly DOL sheet. They should do a minimum of one every evening. Students were also given an assignment dealing with Apostrophe usage. We always collect the DOL sheets on Friday, but the Apostrophe assignment will be due on Wednesday the 23rd. For the remainder of the week, we will be focusing on punctuation: quotations, semi-colons, colons, and proper end punctuation.
The kids also have a map of China along with a Chapter Packet. The packet is due Friday! Any information or knowledge you can pass along, we will gladly accept to add additional information during our classroom discussions. Talking to the kids about your perspectives on international, national, and local events is always a good thing. So much of what they need doesn't come from textbooks, but from those they love and respect.
Today we also started new genre in our Reading class....HORROR!!! The kids will be creating tombstones for their book report, as a creative way of focusing on Theme. This will be due on March 4th. Thanks for checking into our world. Remember...the kids need to read a minimum of 20 pages a night..
Seeya!

Hey everyone!  Trying to keep up with what is going on in room 20?  Well just check on into Walsh's World.  This is new to me, but I know parents sometimes have questions about assignments or projects.  I hope this will help you to stay informed.  My best intention is to keep this current, so keep checking back.
